DIY Bunny Garland

I am a huge fan of decorating for every single holiday, but on a budget! Which is why when I found this DIY bunny garland by The Purple Hydrangea, I just had to share. This project is very neutral and classic, which I love! But if you are more into bright colors, that’s great! Simply switch out the book pages for colored construction paper of your choice. DIY projects are all about getting creative and making something your own.

Now, let’s get started!

  1. Create your bunny stencil

  2. Trace and cut out as many bunnies as you think you’ll need

Do What Gives You Joy

20190421-IMG_4399.jpg

Everybody has their own traditions…but have you ever stopped and wondered why you do certain things? Maybe it’s sending cards out at Christmas, maybe it’s making handmade Valentine’s, or for some it’s filling up your child’s Easter basket the morning of with some extra special sussies. These are all wonderful things IF they bring you joy. So often people go along with certain rituals simply because they feel obligated to do them. Although you might be doing it to show someone you care, if your heart is not really in it, will it really pass on that much joy?

I remember picking my son up from school this time last year (such a foreign concept now…ha!) and another mom asking me if I fill a basket with goodies the morning of Easter. She explained she had just recently learned that this was a thing. However, she then went on to share how magical her Easters were growing up and how special her parents made her and her siblings feel despite these extra goodies.

I told her how that’s what REALLY matters! It’s the memories we make with our loved ones that will be remembered more than the actual goodies. Don’t get me wrong, I still love a fun Easter basket and do typically put one together, but that’s because it gives me joy remembering all the thought my own mom put into our baskets growing up. They were never super fancy, but it gave her joy putting them together and I have that same excitement putting my son’s together.

Any task can fall into one of two categories: a life giver or a life suck. All that I’m saying is don’t compare your life to someone else’s and toil over something like Christmas cards if you feel like a slave addressing + putting stamps on. If money is a little tighter this year and you can’t do Easter baskets, do a new, creative activity with your child in lieu of opening baskets…your child will love that extra time with you just as much :)

So today, think through your own traditions and rituals. What is life giving and what is a life suck? Focus your time more on the things that give you joy, which will allow you to pour more out to those around you!

The Unhurried Life

20200203-IMG_0645.jpg

We’re all about entertaining around here, but with the recent COVID-19 outbreak, staying in + social distancing is the right thing to do. As our busy schedules start looking a lot more free, maybe this is the slow down we all actually needed. Not gonna lie, I’m right there with all of you stir crazy mamas who don’t know what else to do to keep their kiddo(s) busy, but boredom is good for a child’s development (fosters creativity) and I believe this applies to adults as well.

We live in a culture that now expects to be entertained 24/7. When was the last time you actually sat in stillness and didn’t feel like you were going a little crazy?? In addition to this, we’re surrounded by the fear of the virus and other silly things like not having enough toilet paper. A friend recently reminded me that in times like these it’s important to check your perspective.

This is no laughing matter and I do believe we should take it seriously, but we shouldn’t let fear consume us or boredom drive us to tears. Instead, take time these next few weeks to treasure the little things like extra time with your loved ones and a chance to rest instead of living one frazzled day to the next.

I recently had the opportunity to chat with my friend Jen Brazeal on her podcast The Unhurried Life. We discussed how important it is to make space for yourself so you can be creative and keep sight of what truly brings you joy. Often people tell me they’re “not creative”…I frankly believe this is not true. I believe we all were created by a Creator that is creative, so why would he not instill that in us as well?

So often people don’t think they are creative because they lack the skill levels others posses, but that just comes with practice. How can you perfect a skill if you don’t give yourself the space to mess up and try again?

Change your perspective towards this whole lockdown scenario. Instead of feeling trapped, use it as an opportunity to try something new! Here are a few ideas that have sparked joy in our own lives:

  • Try out a new recipe you’ve been meaning to whip up

  • Pull out that SLR camera you have somewhere in your back closet and take some fun shots of your family

  • Sketch an item in your house

  • Pick up that instrument you’ve been meaning to learn and watch a YouTube video lesson

  • Speaking of YouTube…check out our YouTube channel and watch our latest video teaching how to arrange flowers like a pro!

Try something new this week. Be smart + safe, but keep things in perspective. Love others well and extend grace as we are all processing this differently. Most importantly, extend grace to yourself as you find your creative gene…I promise you’ve got one.

Beeritas with Lime, Chili, & Mezcal

We love a good beerita around here and this one by the College Housewife is to die for! It takes your standard margarita to a whole new level. Check out the recipe below!

45c50-lime26chilimezcalbeergaritas-5.jpg

Serves 2

Prep Time

5 min

Ingredients

  1. Lime Wedges

  2. Kosher Salt + Chili Powder, for glass rim

  3. 4 oz Fresh Lime Juice

  4. 2 oz Cointreau

  5. 2 oz Mezcal or Gold Tequila

  6. 2 Tablespoons Agave Nectar

  7. 3-5 Jalapeno Slices (optional, depending on how spicy you like it!)

  8. Crushed Ice

  9. 2 Coronita Bottles

Instructions

  1. Run a lime wedge against two margarita glass rims and dip in a shallow dish filled with mixed kosher salt and chili powder.

  2. Fill a cocktail shaker full of regular ice and add in lime juice, cointreau, mezcal, agave nectar, and jalapeño slices, if using, cover, and shake well for 30 seconds.

  3. Fill the two margarita glasses with crushed ice and strain the cocktail mix into the glasses.

  4. There should be 1/3 to a 1/2 of room left. Open small Coronita beer and carefully place beer bottle into the bottom of the glass. The air should catch and the drink should not overflow. (I'm sorry if yours does! I'm not good with science terms...) Cheers!

Repurpose Your Leftover Corks

We love a good DIY project around here! Often I don’t have a project in mind but find myself wanting to craft anyways. So after some time on Pinterest, I came across a ton of DIY projects using leftover corks. My husband and I love hosting people for dinners and have collected wine corks over the last few years so this was the perfect project.
