Happy Mother's Day...or is it?

May 12, 2019

As I sit outside today, enjoying the beautiful sunshine after a week of rain, I can’t help but notice the grass growing in our front yard. It’s a lush, beautiful green because the Texas summer drought has not set in yet. I’m tempted to go lay down in a certain shady spot and go rest my eyes, but then they are distracted by the patch of grass that won’t seem to grow. My husband and I debate over whether it’s a fungus or if it just doesn’t get enough shade…if any one is a grass pro and wants to come take a look, you’re more than welcome. On top of that, all of the recent rain has caused the grass to quickly grow + some weeds have popped up, so I add yard mowing/maintenance to our list of things to do and it’s no longer a relaxing, happy thing to look at but a burden instead.

We all know the saying, “the grass is greener on the other side”, but I heard a response recently to that that made me laugh. “It’s not greener, it’s just grass.” On this Mother’s Day, I think this is something for all of us ladies to remember…whether you’re a mom or not, stick with me.

There are a lot of mixed emotions out there on Mother's Day. Obviously, there is joy and celebration. But for some, the day is a tough one because they are waiting for their own child, they've lost someone dear to them, or they do not have a good relationship with their mom. For others, they are about to be a new mom and might have uncertainties about what the next chapter will hold. And for those who are already mamas, they might be struggling with anxiety + doubt over whether they are a good enough mom.

So I thought I’d share scenarios from each of our lives so we have a window into what others may be going through when we think that their grass is a little greener. I recommend you to read these even if you’re not in any of these categories or if you’re a dad/son/brother/loved one so you can know how to encourage the women in your life.

Waiting

You just wish your mama would stop asking you “why aren’t you dating anyone?”. You graciously explain for the millionth time that you would if someone would ask. It seems like all your girlfriends are married off and popping out kids, and you just want a boyfriend. Everyone calls you Aunt (so-and-so), which brings you such joy and you don’t want to complain - but you still wish you could have a child of your own.

You can still remember where you were the moment you found out you were going to be a mom. You were so excited and came up with the cutest way to tell your husband that you were expecting. But then you also remember where you were when you lost that baby, and can still remember the pain both physically + emotionally. It’s tough for you to be with your friends that have babies around the same age your little one would be because you just picture what their little personality would be like.

Your friends look at your life and tell you how jealous they are that you and your husband can pick up and travel whenever you want! It does seem quite luxurious, but what you really long for is a weekend at home with your own little family, yet for some reason, you cannot get pregnant. You try every technique, diet, and supplement out there, but test after test comes back void. It’s emotionally, spiritually, and physically exhausting and you’re starting to wonder what’s wrong with you and why you can’t get pregnant.

You’ve decided to foster to adopt and are beyond ecstatic each time a child is placed with you wondering if this will be your forever son or daughter. It seems like this might really be the one, but suddenly a distant family member shows up and wants to take the child back. You are crushed because you feel that you would love that child more than this person they’ve never met, but they are taken from you and you have to start again from scratch.

“I shouldn’t be upset…I already have a child” you tell yourself when you find out you’ve miscarried again. You’re beyond thankful for the one you have, but want him/her to have siblings and you’re wondering now if that will ever happen.

Expecting

You were so excited to find out you are going to be a mom - this is what you’ve been waiting for! But about a month in you start getting sick and you’re still sick with only 10 weeks left. Motivation is at an all-time low and you don’t have the energy to “nest”.

You weren’t supposed to get pregnant. What will everyone say when they find out? You don’t agree with abortion because you don’t want to take the life of an innocent baby, but right now you feel like your life is over.

“I’m supposed to feel excited…but I’m not.” My husband and I want to have kids, but not now - it’s too soon. I really like my job + freedom and I don’t know what that will look like once the child comes.

You’re so excited to be a mom! This is what you’ve been waiting for. But now doubt and anxiousness are sneaking in. “Am I really ready for this?” You’ve read all the books, have baby proofed the house, and have your birthing plan…but is it all enough?

Mom-Ing

“My little one is a gift” is what you have to remind yourself as your child is screaming in your face. Why won’t he stop crying? Is it something I’m doing/not doing? The questioning overwhelms you more than the very loud noise that’s coming out of such a small child. “It will get better”, you tell yourself, but as the days pass on you just get more discouraged.

You swipe through the photos of your friends’ recent trip to Disney with their kids and wish you could take your kids, but you are barely getting by with this month’s bills. You look like you have it all together and try to maintain the same lifestyle as the others to “keep up with the Jones”, but you feel like you can’t wear that mask much longer because it’s starting to crack.

You work full-time, but are a mama too. You battle with yourself wondering if you are spending too much time doing one or the other.

You gave up working to be at home with your kiddo - which you love and are so thankful for the opportunity. However, you sometimes feel as though you no longer have an identity past “mom” and long for adult conversation during your day.

You’ve got the picture perfect family - loving husband and multiple kids. Yet, you still feel alone. You make it through your day carpooling and going from practice to practice. You occasionally get a date night here and there, but you really don’t feel like you know the man you pose so well next to in pictures.

The common thread?

We all have expectations and “our plan”. Typically, we conjure this plan from the hypothetical standard our culture has created. No matter what stage you are in (and so many are not listed here) the common thread is that we all at times feel discontent and this spawns from insecurity and loneliness. Know that I say this with the upmost sensitivity to each of you no matter which stage you’re in. However, you may feel stuck in one rut, but then once you’re life stage changes and you’re out of one rut you might quickly find yourself in another one. It’s easy to look at others and think “the grass is greener on the other side”, but it’s just grass. We all have something we’re struggling with.

As women we struggle with a lot of hurt, but instead of internalizing it we should give it over to Jesus who can carry that and find community to share our ups-and-downs with. Some of you may be rolling your eyes if you don’t want to hear me talk about God right now - because in your mind you might be thinking He’s the reason you’re in this spot in the first place. I get that…but He did not want us to live in a broken world. This is why He sent Jesus to save us from the pain that we would face. We will still go through it, but with the power of a God that knows our pain. He is the “man of sorrows” as seen in Isaiah 53:3, “He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.“

I recently listened to a podcast asking how I know if I’m a good mom. They quickly answered the question by saying that instead of striving to be a good mom, we should be striving to be more like Jesus. We will never be enough, but how freeing it is that we have someone who is enough!

He also created us to do life in community so we don’t have to face this hurt alone. We need women who can point us to the truth and love on us when we don’t believe it. I feel that Mother’s Day, no matter which stage of life you are in, should be a day to show love and support to each other.

Regardless of where you are in your journey, I hope you feel loved, blessed, and encouraged today!

Friday Faves - Garden Essentials!

May 10, 2019

"There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments."

Are you a plant mama or wannabe? We often hear of people having a green thumb, meaning anything they plant flourishes. For us, it's been a love/hate relationship over the years just to keep plants alive, but we've recently been inspired by this quote: "There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments."

Gardening can be therapeutic - getting your hands dirty and seeing tangibly how a seed can bloom into something great...there is nothing like it. It teaches you patience, but blesses you with joy and beauty when success does come! A garden is the opening statement to your home - even if it's just a potted plant outside your door! So, today we are talking about some of our favorite gardening accessories.

IMG_5791.jpg

Watering Can

A good watering can is a necessity! When searching for a watering can, we went with a choice that was practical, budget-friendly and cute. This watering can was an Ikea find and although they don’t sell this particular one in store anymore, you can still find it on Amazon. Ikea has a ton of other cute and practical watering can options - check them out here.

It’s important to consider what kind of watering you will be doing when choosing the right can. If you’re watering a large garden outside, you’ll want a wide spout that can cover a lot at the same time. Versus, if you’re watering inside or a potted plant, you’ll want one with a more narrow spout so you can water specific plants.

IMG_5788.jpg

Self-Watering Bulbs

Self-watering bulbs are great for the person who can’t keep track of when to water or is traveling and needs her plants watered while away. We found this cute bird-shaped bulb on Amazon in a 2 pack for just $11.99! This particular size is great for smaller plants…just fill with water, stick into the soil of the pot, and refill again when its emptied. So easy, so cute!

IMG_5790.jpg

Gardening Gloves

Who said gardening gloves couldn’t double as a fun, fashion accessory? If you frequent Target as much as we do, then you’ve probably already fallen in love with the Opalhouse brand. They’ve expanded beyond home decor and are now also carrying gardening items! These gloves are not only beautiful but comfortable as well. Plus, they have a great grip on the palm-side. Check them out at a Target near you!

IMG_5795.jpg

Bird House

Another Opalhouse find, this bird house is just $16.99 but we found it on sale! With the warmer weather and sunshine coming out to play, we find ourselves hanging out on the back porch a little more these days. Just fill this ceramic bird house with some local bird seed and watch as the little flocks swoop in to spend some time on the patio with you.

IMG_5793.jpg

Trowel

A good trowel is definitely necessary for gardening. We found this one at our local Home Depot for just $5! You can also find these in a pack of 3 with other gardening accessories. With its steel head and durable wooden handle, you’ll be using this trowel for years to come!

Mother's Day Basket

May 7, 2019

Who needs a superhero when you have a mom?

Do you ever have trouble figuring out one, good gift for mom? If you’re anything like us and can’t choose - try a gift basket! Mother's Day is this Sunday, so now is the time to start thinking about a gift if you haven't already. Our basket has a mix of pampering items + home decor in it, so you're sure to make her day. Most of these items (or similar ones) can easily be found at Target, HEB, or local boutiques...or for those who don't love to shop in store, there is ALWAYS our best pal, Amazon. You just need a cute basket, a small bottle of champagne and a few other items to fill the basket. Check out our choices below!

IMG_4711.jpg

Pampering Items

What better way to show mom you care than by a mini-pampering session at home? These are simple items that moms can incorporate into their normal routines.

First off is Queen Bee body spray by Good Chemistry - a line carried by Target. Queen Bee is made with essential oils and also comes in a roller-ball or perfume if you think she’d prefer those over body spray! We have been big fans of this scent for a long time and highly recommend it. Don’t think mom will enjoy this particular scent? The Good Chemistry line has plenty of other scents to choose from!

Second is the Hydro Boost hydrating mask made by Neutrogena. This mask works WONDERS! You know that feeling when your skin is dewey because you have been drinking a ton of water and eating healthy? This mask gives you that feeling even when you’ve been drinking one too many margaritas and eating one too many tacos! Bonus? We have actually seen a decrease in the lines on our faces after using this product…no lie!!

Lastly is the Kit-sch Jade Roller! Jade rollers are ALL the rage right now because of their many benefits. Rollers are used as a gentle way to massage tension and relieve stress from our facial area, help in reducing fine lines, assist with better circulation, and help massage in facial products or essential oils. Jade rollers are naturally cool on your face but tell mom to try leaving hers in the fridge between uses for an extra ounce of chilled goodness on her face! Want to know how to properly use? Check out this tutorial with some great tips.

IMG_4712.jpg

Home Goods

What mama doesn’t love a sweet home good that she can see every day and be reminded of her kids who love her? These simple items will go a long way in her heart!

First, we found a small decorative floral piece that will bring a fun pop of color into your mom’s home. Of course, you can choose something that really fits in well with her existing home decor style! Maybe faux eucalyptus, hydrangeas, cotton stems, etc. There are a ton of options out there!

Lastly, we found these cute dish towels that make any home feel like summer! We love combining a patterned towel with a more solid one so that when they hang in the kitchen together they really compliment each another! Hand towels are always a fun gift because they’re a small, easy way to spruce up a space in a new way.

Friday Faves - Cinco De Mayo

May 3, 2019

If you’re in San Antonio, it may feel like you are still recovering from all the Fiesta festivities…but for everyone else, Cinco De Mayo is finally here so it’s time to bust out your papel picado + maracas. Check out some of our Cinco De Mayo essentials below!

Easy Guacamole Recipe

At every Cinco De Mayo party (and let’s be real, any party) a solid guacamole recipe is a must! Below is our go to recipe for fresh guac that everyone is going to love.

In one large bowl, mix together: 6 diced whole avocados (Fun Tip: Cut the avocado in half and smush through a cooling rack for the perfect avocado cubes), 1 fresh tomato diced, half of one large yellow/sweet onion diced, 2 cloves of fresh garlic minced, fresh cilantro diced (to taste), salt, pepper, cumin, garlic powder (to taste) and finally one fresh lemon or lime juice squeezed.

IMG_5705.jpg

Cactus Lights

Whether you’re having the festivities inside or outside, these cute LED cactus lights are a sure way to really make your party stand out! Spruce up your food + beverage table or hang them on your photo booth display, either way, this small decor detail will make a big impression. We found these lights at HEB for just $10 - at that price, you can easily purchase a few strands and use them throughout the party.

IMG_5707.jpg

serape coozie

Every Fiesta needs serape coozies! We love these because they give an added touch to the party without breaking the bank. You can find these on Amazon in party packs of 3 or more and you can even find many variations of this same coozie for the person who prefers wine over beer.

Texas Ranch Water Recipe

May 2, 2019

Temperatures are rising…

…and summer is just around the corner! We have officially traded our red wine for a more refreshing beverage of choice - Texas Ranch Water! This is a go-to for us because it is easy to make, light + refreshing, PLUS it's low calories which pairs well with bathing suit season 👙💁🏼‍♀️

Check out our recipe below. All you need is: Tequila, Topo Chico + limes!

- 1.5 ounces Tequila

- Juice from 1-2 limes

- Top with ice

- Fill the rest with Topo Chico

- Garnish with a slice of lime

Looking for a sweeter taste? Substitute regular Topo Chico with grapefruit flavored Topo! We prefer using Blanco Tequila for this recipe, but if you want a little more kick of Tequila flavor, substitute Blanco or Reposado.

Inspired to make this drink? Take a photo after you make it and tag us @openingstatement + #osimpression!

#MedalMonday : 2019 Fiesta Medals We Love!

April 15, 2019

Fiesta is upon us, San Antonio - time to add to your medal collection!

For those of you not from the area or are new to town, let us explain this crazy little tradition. It’s actually not a new thing - the origins of Fiesta medals can be traced back to 1946 when King Antonio first gave out commemorative coins at parades and other events (according to Henry Graham's History of the Texas Cavaliers). Then years later, SA’s retailer Joske’s started handing out wearable coin-holders that children wore as badges…thus starting the medal phenomenon. What is considered to be the first official Fiesta medal was handed out in 1971 by King Antonio XLIX Charles G. Orsinger. Other medals were used before then, mainly worn by Fiesta royalty, so these were the inaugural ones distributed to the public. Then the craze of collecting different medals really took off in the 90s.

They are an easy way to make a statement during the Fiesta season, so we were so excited to put together our list of favorites for 2019! Here they are:

Overall winners!

IMG_5328.jpg

Best All-Around

Belle & Union’s first ever Fiesta medal made its impact on us! Not only because of its unique colors and spinning letter press wheel, but because 25% of the proceeds made from this medal will go to Soldiers Angels, a local and national non-profit that supports our military and veterans. Since it landed in three of our different categories and leaves a lasting impression, we chose it as the best all-around medal for 2019!

Most Unforgettable

La Casa Frida is a Mexican inspired boutique based in San Antonio that specializes in unique and one of a kind handmade items from all over Mexico. Housed in an Airstream trailer on Broadway, their mission is to bring a little piece of Mexico with unique products that represent the art and culture of our heritage. Their Mexican tile inspired medal paired with the unique pattern on the ribbon made this medal most unforgettable! Head to their trailer to grab yours today!

Most Iconic

Any San Antonian can attest to the lasting impression Coach Gregg “Pop” Popovich has had on the Spurs organization and our city. His one-of-a-kind post-game interviews make us laugh and his steadfast loyalty to the players and coaching staff make him a truly stand up guy. On top of all this, he’s now the NBA’s coach with the most wins of all time. That’s why this medal by Push SATX is our Most Iconic medal of 2019. Pop, you will always be our “Gran Papi", GO SPURS GO!

Medals For a Cause!

Teed Off at Cancer

Teed Off at Cancer is a San Antonio-based nonprofit, dedicated to improving the quality of life for children diagnosed with cancer and their families. They work with The Children's Hospital of San Antonio and University Hospital to bring hope and comfort to families who have recently learned of a cancer diagnosis in the family. Head to their Instagram to find out where they are selling medals next!

IMG_5299.jpg

Merit Coffee

Merit Coffee began in San Antonio and has expanded to Austin and most recently, Dallas. Their #GoodEnergy is tasted in all their coffee and felt in every shop you walk into. This year, proceeds from their coffee bag medal is going to support Band of Runners, an organization that empowers veterans and their surviving members by sharing the community of trail running, and the physical and psychological benefits that running in nature provides. Head to a shop near you and grab yours!

IMG_5301.jpg

Art of Donut

The Art of Donut creates unforgettable memories by combining new and distinctive flavors in their donuts. Their motto is, “We don't just craft donuts, we craft moments.” We love that motto! Their medal is a burst of color and glitter on maracas resting in a donut, how fun is that? This year, 100% of their proceeds will go to The American Pit Bull Foundation. Head to their shop to get a donut and a medal, you won’t regret it!

Movers and Shakers!

IMG_5326.jpg
IMG_5290.jpg

Chick-fil-A

A fast-food chain that needs no introduction, their Fiesta medal for 2019 features a dancing cow sporting a sombrero and cowboy boots holding their classic “Eat Mor Chikin” sign in Spanish. This medal sticks to the Chick-fil-A that we all know and love but adds in just enough San Antonio touch that we can’t resist adding it to our collection. So “Koma Mas Poyo” and purchase your Fiesta medal at a location near you!

IMG_5288.jpg

El Paraiso

Celebrating 35 years of business, El Paraiso’s ice cream and fruit bars are a delicious San Antonio treat that everyone should enjoy during the warm, summer months! When you’re driving down Fredericksburg, you can’t miss their blue and white striped building. Their medal not only pays homage to their iconic stripes, but also has a spinning medallion in the center. Treat yourself today with an ice cream bar and a fun medal to go with it!

Skull-Tastic!

IMG_5302.jpg
IMG_5303.jpg
IMG_5304.jpg

Summer Moon

Summer Moon moved to San Antonio just a few years ago but have really jumped into the Fiesta spirit with their glittery sugar skull! We love the combination of orange and turquoise in their medal, but what makes this one so special is the wood-burning eye sockets that give a shout to their wood-fired coffee. Head to their Tri-Point or Alamo Ranch location to grab a coffee and medal to-go!

Burgerteca

Chef Johnny Hernandez has outdone himself on the restaurant front and now in the Fiesta medal arena as well. The sombrero rocking skull gives a playful and fun feel to the skeleton we have come to know and love sitting outside of Burgerteca. So turn on your Coco soundtrack and head to Burgerteca to grab your medal!

Most Colorful!

Salata

Salata’s 2019 medal gives us all the tutti-frutti, Carmen Miranda feels. The bright yellow ribbon makes this festive medal stand out even more. Treat yourself today to a delicious salad and a fun medal!

Rise up

Rise Up’s mission is to serve healthy and delicious food that everyone can enjoy. Well their medal is almost as colorful as their acai bowls. Healthy living starts with healthy eating, and that’s their commitment.

The Fruteria

This bright and glittery medal makes us want to sit pool-side with a Las Fresas fruit drink from The Fruteria! These medals come with either a lime green ribbon or a red ribbon. Head to one of their locations fast so you can choose the ribbon color of your choice!

Support Local!

From Scratch Farm

From Scratch Farm is located in Boerne and its products are made with the most natural and simple ingredients. We love their punny medal and could not resist showing it off. Follow them on Instagram to find out where you can purchase their medal.

Fiesta Feet

Fiesta Feet is a local business whose shoes are handmade in Mexico with bright colors and genuine leather. Proceeds from Fiesta Feet are donated to Casa Kamami in Guadalajara, Mexico — a foster home for abused girls. Our favorite thing about this medal is that it includes the famous line “Show your shoes!” that you often hear at the Battle of Flowers Parade.

Bless your heart

Simple, dainty and beautiful, this fiesta medal will have you falling in love with the Fiesta season! Head to one of Bless Your Heart’s two boutique locations to shop for your Fiesta wear and grab a medal.

Pella

Founded in 1925, Pella is an innovative window and door company that has been owned by the same family since its existence. We love that they chose to stick to their roots in their Fiesta medal with this adorable window pane highlighted with colorful flowers and a fun Fiesta banner.

G.W. Mitchell Construction

We might be biased because this medal was designed by our very own Stephanie Hill’s husband, Preston, who won G.W. Mitchell’s Fiesta medal design contest amongst their employees. The brightly colored medal is dressed with the Mitchell’s “M” dangling from a crane and a papel picado background design.

IMG_3576.JPG

Flower Child

This outfit is perfect in that it’s not just simple and comfortable, but it’s super cute as well! The flowers remind us of the ones you’ll see along the highway on your way there and the touch of color gives this outfit the pop of spring that Round Top deserves. Plus, the embroidery + turquoise detailing on the buttons gives it a true Texas feel.

All About Fringe

As you explore tent-to-tent you’ll find a lot of great things that have been spruced up with extra textures or bling. In the same way, this shirt has an extra pop with the fringe on the sleeves and tie at the bottom. It can get warmer during the day, so don’t be afraid to whip out your shorts. With all the walking you’ll do, we suggest some sturdy sandals that will give you support all day long.

Muted Spring

Hunter green is everywhere this season which is why we threw in these classic green pants! They are casual but with the added details of the cinched waist and bow, these pants are easy to dress up. We threw on a muted pink, floral top to bring this look together. The top can be tucked, tied, or left hanging. Both the pants and the top are lighter materials to help keep you cool.

Ranch vibes

This look gives us all the Jurassic Park vibes but with a modern flair. Denim on denim is not just for the Canadian Tuxedo, but is a go-to outfit that anybody can rock. Throw on a beautiful mustard scarf and full brim hat to complete the look.

here comes the sun

For warm, sunny days searching for the best antiques, throw on a bright top and denim shorts. You’ll be turning heads — not just with your antique finds, but your cute outfit as well!

Red dirt cute

Lastly, we have this red dirt colored dress that is easy and breezy. Paired with a light burgundy scarf and turquoise earrings, it’s perfect for long days searching for the unique pieces for your home or just swinging by Royer’s for a homemade pie. Either way, you’ll be rocking this outfit.

Everyone is loving the Enneagram these days and we are no exception! Self to Lose — Self to Find by Marilyn Vancil takes a biblical approach to the 9 Enneagram types guiding you toward self-awareness. By uncovering your Enneagram type, you gain a deeper understanding of your true self.

Favorite Quotes:

“This invitation [to deny oneself] is less about depriving the self, and more about disowning, or renouncing a relationship with the part of ourself that is not what God created us to be.”

“The ultimate desired outcome is freedom — freedom to love God, love yourself, and love others.”

“In our natural minds, it’s hard to comprehend that there might be a beneficial result of releasing our protective shell, our seed coat that is familiar and comfortable and seems to serve us so well. But there is more to letting go than just losing. There is also something wonderful to gain.”

Favorite Quotes:

“Believing with your head is a great start, but God’s call to us is to keep going. Believe with your head and let this belief sink deep into your heart, your hands, your feet — your whole life — as you live the very truth you believe.”
